Oh I fully just gave up 😅 the reason I didn’t get it figured out is cause I didn’t stick with it lol. My previous laptop had broken and I decided I wanted to just go ahead and be up and running on the replacement rather than tinkering with void setup. I might come back to it at some point, but it’s definitely beyond my competency. Especially since ideally I’d like to have luks encryption, which I know you can do, but not from the more basic install process if I remember right.

Network manager (so I could use GNOME settings to change networks), and audio through pipewire were the two remaining things. I gave setting up pipewire a try following a YouTube tutorial, but it didn’t work properly, and at that point I decided I just wanted to have a working laptop again after a couple weeks without. But I did learn a bunch! and got a lot more comfortable with the command line!

Package kit is what allows graphical software stores or graphical package managers to integrate with the native package manager backend if I understand right. I’d miss being able to browse native packages along side flatpaks.

I found that fork, but yeah I don’t think it works. There were also one or two graphical software stores specifically for xbps, but I don’t recall if they’re still maintained, and I don’t think there was a GTK option. Part of me desperately hopes someone will make a simple distro based on void that functions as a customized install, kinda like spiral linux or gecko linux, for debian and opensuse. Until then, I know that my perfect distro might be out there, if I can just successfully get everything initally set up 🥲

Maybe I’ll make an IRL linux friend I’m close enough to harass into helping me with it at some point lol. Hope you have a lovely day!

Im glad you got value out of it, it’s a subject I care a lot about as someone who’s fairly mentally ill and tries to hold myself to a high standard in how I engage with people.

I’ve never really had issues with systemd, but I must say when I was setting up void I did really enjoy the runit init system 🤷‍♂️

Its a tabletop game that bears some resemblance to dungeons and dragons, where you have miniature figures representing troops and move them around a physical battlefield scale model, fighting and strategizing against another player

I tried when I set up my new laptop and definitely learned a ton, but eventually stalled at getting network manager setup so I could use GNOME settings to configure networks, and getting sound set up

If it had package kit implementation so I could use a graphical package manager/app store it’d basically be my perfect distro if I could get it set up the way I want. An independent distro, super elegant, if I understand right the packages are all vanilla, “stable rolling release”. I really like it, a minimal distro is just a bit beyond me skill-wise, and I’d miss having a way to browse native (non-flatpak) applications graphically

I think the important thing is really just that mental illness doesn’t shield you from accountability for how you impact other people, and for a personality disorder that primarily manifests in traits that harm people, that’s a hard thing to reconcile with that person’s merits. Doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t, just that because you are still responsible for potentially hurting people, and have a disorder that makes you very likely to do so, those things will be very hard for people to square.

Another example is paraphilias. Paraphilias can include things like pedophilia, which manifests in a desire to do something that would subject someone to profound amounts of trauma, the likes of which most of us couldn’t even begin to appreciate. Can someone with such a paraphilia be a good person who is kind, and does not harm people in that way? Yes. Can that person be largely a good person in most contexts, but cause people enormous harm as a result of their paraphilia? Also yes.

In some ways we are all people with conditions that affect who we would be otherwise, and in other ways we are all just people, and conditions are used descriptively to communicate the traits that we have.

At the end of the day, the thing that matters is how you treat people. If you cause people harm, it might be more understandable given the context of a personality disorder, but it doesn’t absolve you of any responsibility. And if you don’t, then you haven’t done anything wrong. And I mean that for each moment in time, each interaction. Humans are messy and complicated, and generally ideas like “good person”, “bad person”, are reductive.

I’m sorry you feel trapped or defined by your diagnosis. That can be a painful place to be. I have a close friend with borderline personality disorder who has at times felt similarly. Only thing that matters is whether you’re an asshole. Only thing that ever has mattered, only thing that ever will.

Edit: just want to be very clear- the fact that it will be hard for people to engage with you purely based on your behaviour in a given interaction is not something you deserve. Its the actions and how they affect people that count, even if I can empathize with why it’d be hard for people

I mean, a lot of cars have a genuinely phenomenal life span, if you don’t mind getting something that isn’t shiny and new you can probably get like a 2012 Toyota or Honda and drive it till the wheels fall off. My dream car is from the 90s and people still generally regard them as fairly reliable

Eventually it’ll be an issue, but that does leave a lot of time for nerds and hackers to find a way to gut networking stuff while telling the car it’s still intact. Dunno if we’ll ever see an open source car OS compatible with the systems in major manufacturer’s vehicles, but privacy workarounds feel like they could be pretty realistic
