  • As an Australian I do have a bit of a problem with mandatory voting. Mostly because it forces the uninformed to go vote too, so we get the same breed of fearmongering and sensationalist headlines on the newspaper front pages that are all owned by the same billionaires and the same idiots on social security voting for the party that would abolish social security because Facebook told them the other party wanted to let muslims rape their girlfriend.

But the voting on the weekend and the democracy sausage we definitely got right.

  • Not too long after it came out I was good at Siege and I mean good I was ranked in the top 1000 players and I thought that was pretty badass. I got a DM from some guy who was like “Hey I’m from TEAM and we wanted to know if you wanted to try out for our Siege squad?” I said thanks but no thanks, I have a mortgage and a full time and then some job. I dont want to take on the obligation.

I then went and googled the team, I was being courted by serious professional players. I still decided I didnt want that headache but as someone who has always been an underachiever it was like an IRL achievement popup or a level up notification. Like… look what I can achieve when I actually give a fuck and put the work in.

  • The truth these days is that damn near every car has reasons why you shouldnt buy it.

The Germans are still fraudulently trading on their rep from the 80s, the French are always being different just for the fucking hell of it wether the customer likes it or not, the Italians love needing bespoke tools for simple jobs, everything British is now chinese or german, the Americans would be burned at the stake for suggesting the next model be smaller, Japans “reliability” rep is mostly being upheld by Toyota and Honda who charge accordingly, China is coming along in leaps and bounds but still cant figure out “supply chain logistics” for spare parts and Korea just keeps dropping the fucking ball over dumb simple shit.

People ask me all the time “What do you think about CAR” and Ive honestly resorted to “If you like it, buy it. Ive known people with reliable Fiats and unreliable Toyotas. The only unhappy people are the ones who bought a car they didnt WANT.”

  • Because when its good, its so fucking good. They spend literal millions developing their menu to give you a dropkick to the balls of dopamine. FAT! SALT! MSG! HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP! REPEAT!

But that requires the stars to align. You need the buns and salad items to not be stale, the chips and meat for the burger to be hot and fresh, the burger to be assembled by someone giving half a fuck, the postmix machine to be set up correctly and give you the right mix, actually fizzy and ice cold. You rarely get the whole meal “just right” but when it is, that one perfect meal sticks in your brain like a catchy song and will carry you through the next half a dozen so-so feeds while you chase the dragon.

These days I only allow myself one trip to KFC a month and I go in and sit down in the restaurant because if something isnt right I go complain and ask for a remake because I spend 29 days a month counting every calorie and tracking every macro because you are not gonna fuck up my blowout meal.

  • I think you got what I meant twisted.

Its sad that thats where American thinking HAS to go because America had 69 victims and 12 shooters dead in 300+ incidents last year. Australia has had 6 incidents and 2 deaths since 1991 and our schools have fences too.

Theres dozens of reasons outside of shootings that schools may want to control access and yeah it does look like a prison and it is sad.

  • See the sad thing is that almost your entire thoughts on this is centered around school shootings. Theres tons of other reasons schools might put up fences but to Americans kids deciding to ditch school and get into shit or getting themselves hurt or parents with custody disputes trying to gain access to their child when they shouldnt are just minor concerns.

  • Ive said many times that AI could be used to enormous human benefit. Its just a huge and unreasonable privacy nightmare to implement. For example, imagine how much better the traffic in major cities could be if lights and speed limits were all controlled by an AI coordinating and tracking every cars by gps. Adjusting speed limits and diversions to maximise flow. Or being able to inform everyone on a highway that there has been an accident ahead immediately and adjust the speed limits accordingly.

If you can cut every cars driving time by 10% it would be the same emissions wise as taking 10% of cars off the road, save millions of man hours in people sitting in traffic… I just have zero faith that the information you could extract wouldnt be abused.

  • 2005 Peugeot 206 Gti.

I blew up my car on saturday and it was a very cheap shitbox that I could buy with cash on hand on a sunday to get to work Monday.

Im working my way through everything wrong with it upgrading as I go. If I make it through the problems list, then Ill have an amazing base to start adding horsepower and removing practicality once I get a new daily driver.

I’m just as critical of Lemmy as I was of Reddit.

Lemmy is a very left leaning echo chamber and a lot of people dont want to hear counterpoints to their soap-box rantings.

I do love Lemmy, but theres a decent percentage of fucking whackadoodles on here too. Also I’m not installing Linux, stop asking.
