Against me! - Those Anarcho Punks Are Mysterious
Wrong thread, sorry.
Weird. I can’t see the .ml after your name. Must be a Lemmy bug.
Mainstream media also has those people. Real journalists do exist.
Mainstream media is more accountable in a lot of ways. There’s absolutely less misinformation on mainstream media. All the facts they publish are true. The same can’t be said for social media.
Social media can be less filtered, for good or bad. It can also just seem less filtered while there’s absolutely a filter deciding what gets promoted to you. Look at Elon’s recent moves on X, for example.
As long as you understand the nuance, it can be fine. Especially if you’re using mainstream media to verify facts from social media.
You think TikTok is better than mainstream media for news?
Same. Just without talking, people always think the worst. The admins for Lemmy.World are a non-profit in the Netherlands.
They’re a bit more professional than Midwest.social, who I absolutely respect. But there’s a different level of professionalism here than the guy hosting a server out of his Ohio basement.
On the other hand, they don’t have the big corporate backing and structure of something like Reddit. LW doesn’t have a team of lawyers if they get into trouble. Do they even have one lawyer? How involved is that lawyer if they do exist? I can’t say.
It’s largely because of new tiered pricing. They want to extract the maximum price while not losing any customers.
To do this, they first double or triple all their prices. Then, for those who are willing to stand on one leg, pat their head, and rub their stomach* while ordering the right things, they’ll charge you half price.
(*By this I mean use their app. The main purpose of the app and the deals are to charge everyone what they’re willing to pay.)
I can blame McDonald’s for a lot of things, but not this. They didn’t really get a choice.
I’m sorry you had to go through that. Shoplifting with your kid is a different level.
That’s a real thing.
I suspect the Hallmark card is the story you were told.
When your kid goes to first grade, take it in, donate it, and tell the story.
It’s interesting seeing it from the admin side. Here, at least, they’re largely just trying to stay out of trouble. When lawyers or police come knocking at the door, it’s already too late, and we’re not always sure where that line is.
A couple things we absolutely know will cause trouble. I don’t know if/where that line would be with shoplifting.
And of course the mods have their own opinions.
I don’t think they realize how easy (and low risk) it can be to set up a Mastodon server. Particularly when you don’t have to allow the public to create accounts.
It’s weird to be in a comment chain where you’re not seeing the replies that other people are seeing.
Pizza places have dealt with that forever. It’s normal.
the whole point of this Fediverse experiment is for things to be distributed
I strongly disagree with this. This point is that it CAN be distributed, not that it needs to be.
That’s like saying the whole point of making divorce legal is so that everybody gets divorced. It’s the option that’s the important bit.
I’d avoid anything federated with Hexbear or Lemmygrad.
What he and guys administration does is newsworthy. What he says is really not, outside of the extremes.
